Chad Mirkin, "Colloidal Crystal Engineering with DNA" | KNI Distinguished Seminar
On November 1, 2021, Professor Chad Mirkin (Northwestern University) presented the KNI Distinguished Seminar on "Colloidal Crystal Engineering with DNA: Repurposing the Blueprint for Life".
Mirkin discusses how DNA and other nucleic acids can be used as highly programmable surface ligands ("bonds") to control the spacing and symmetry of nanoparticle building blocks ("atoms") in structurally sophisticated materials, analogous to a genetic code for materials assembly. The sequence and length tunability of nucleic acid bonds has allowed us to define a powerful set of design rules for the construction of nanoparticle superlattices with more than 70 unique lattice symmetries, spanning over one ...

Great lecture. This summarizes pretty well a 4month course on electron microscopy. One could easily spend 1 week talking about vacuum systems, 1 week on electron guns, 2 weeks on electron-matter interaction, etc.. SEM is a very complex tool-system involving a lot of fundamental physics as well as top engineering... the effort and clarity put in this lecture is awesome. Thanks.

Thank you a lot! I once got an introduction to our SEM and am working with EBSD every now and then, and i couldn't get a proper explaination to the lens alignment and the sigmatism and always did it by feeling and trying around without knowing to go one direction at a time, which is always a pain in the A. Is it possible to lens align on tilted samples? Because my EBSD samples are always 70° pre-tilted.

Hi The Kavli Nanoscience Institlute at Caltech, I have question about your video 1/ Could SEM see nano materials, clearly or blur ? (I mean it's a normal SEM, not FE-SEM or high resolution SEM). 2/ Which is the best method, cheap and convenience for characterizing (shape and size) nano materials? I hope I would receice your answer soon. Thanks The Kavli Nanoscience Institlute at Caltech so much.
